The Little Things

Cup of tea in bed

So I decided to do this post because besides the fact I like to write and like to change up my content every now and again. Lately those that follow me on Twitter especially might know I've been feeling a bit low.
And hey it happens to us all!
Instead of doing a whiny and ranty post about what's got me that way instead I thought I'd try and turn it into a positive. I do love a good inspirational quote or a good pick me up so that sort of got me thinking about not only the things that cheer me up when I'm down but the little things.
The little things that can make a shift to change it into a big thing!
I've always have been a lover of the small things the smallest, tiniest things that make you happy.

We all have one or many whether you probably realise it or not. But those many can sometimes be taken for granted.
For instance I make a cup of tea probably every morning without fail (unless I'm unreasonably late for uni.. ahem I do try not to make that often) but sometimes it just takes that one cup of tea you have in the evening; with maybe a few biscuits that turns into maybe more for you to say actually that made me really happy and it was probably just the smallest cheapest thing on earth that can even and hopefully put you in a happy mood.

 For other examples I love:

Waking up in the dark of the early morning and just hearing the sound of the birds whistling whilst then realising you still have another 3 hours before you have to get up.

Turning up at the Bus Stop/Train Station just as the train/bus comes in. Without having to wait AGES

Hearing the rain in the evening outside as you drift off to sleep tucked up in bed and all warm

Finding something that you thought you'd lost forever that turns up completely out the blue

Sleeping in fresh, newly changed bed covers

Waking up to breakfast in bed

A friendly stranger or person in a shop that's kind and polite

Making a cup of tea that you forgot you made, to remember when its a perfect drinking temperature

Getting something done that's been playing on your mind for ageeess

A long soak in a hot bath, with a good bath bomb!

Finding out an item of clothing you've wanted for ages finally went into the sale (and being so glad you waited)

Indulging on that chocolate you found in the house you forgot you had

An unexpected kiss or cuddle

I think that when we do take those little things for granted we don't mean to, we all have busy lives and that can be damn hard to take a few minutes to really appreciate them. I think sometimes that it is the things that are right under your nose too.
Before on Saturdays when I was working I would wish those days away barely seeing the day so I looked forward to the night but now the afternoons are something that I really love especially the afternoons in winter there is something about them that feels so cosy. Being almost summer now I look forward to picnics in the park and long walks.
The same way it feels to make a hot bath at the end of a long day or have a gin and tonic at the end of a tough week.
Life is all about little things, little things that can make you feel a whole lot better.

About Time is my favourite film and I love the part at the end where he talks about living each day and then reliving it again just to remember the things we might have forgotten or taken for granted.
 It went something like this:

"And so he told me his secret formula for happiness. Part one of the two part plan was that I should just get on with ordinary life, living it day by day, like anyone else. But then came part two of Dad's plan. He told me to live every day again almost exactly the same. The first time with all the tensions and worries that stop us noticing how sweet the world can be, but the second time noticing."

If you've watched the film you'll understand. If not avoid this next paragraph if you don't like a spoiler. If you know the plot read on.

The man has the ability to go back in time. Which as you know none of us can do, well I don't think so anyway... But I love the idea that's behind it it's such a simple idea that we should all consider doing everyday. Living life as though we only have one shot at it, doing it right the first time and really being grateful for what it is we have.
And like I said that's sometimes hard to do, but when you do.
It's so worth it

Whats you little thing?
